In a somewhat embarrassing snafu, the prime minister was spotted using what appeared to be a smartphone from Huawei.
Boris Johnson's appearance on This Morning saw him snap a selfie with presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, and he reportedly used a Huawei P20 Pro to do it. If you've been keeping up with the Huawei news, you'll know this is ridiculously hypocritical given Johnson's recent comments on the Chinese manufacturer.
The participation of Huawei in the UK's 5G network has been up in the air since the US voiced its concerns over China and security. Following this week's Nato summit, Johnson hinted that Huawei may get booted from the UK's 5G market after all, rather than just being involved in the "non essential" portions of it. So using a handset from Huawei after all that is a bit bloody stupid, to say the least.
A spokesman from Johnson's camp is denying that the phone belonged to Boris, but co-host Willoughby said, "he whipped his phone out and he took a selfie,” with Schofield adding, "But he didn’t know he had to press the button…” A sign that it wasn't Boris' phone after all? Or simply evidence that he's as incapable of figuring out the intricacies of his own smartphone as he is at running the country? Who knows. [Belfast Telegraph]
