Commuters Protest Against Northern Rail's General Existence

By Gary Cutlack on at

Train users with no option other than to use Northern services have gathered at Manchester's Victoria station to demand something is done, and the main thing they'd like to see done is something others have demanded previously – that the calamitous rail franchise is stripped of its approval to operate.

Because as well as generally being slow, late, dirty, overcrowded, often cancelled and running antique carriages still with attachments at the front for steam trains and hay racks for horses, the prices are rising too, as they always do at this time of year when the New Year inflation-linked ticket prices go up. Increasing the cost of travelling on such a grim service is the final straw for local protesters, who are demanding at least some service-reflecting fare cuts until punctuality targets are better met.

The protests are being organised through people-power pressure group Northern Resist, which has a great Facebook presence to scroll through, if you fancy reading real-time updates on just how chaotic things are on a daily basis within Northern's footprint. [Northern Resist via Guardian]
