If it makes you feel any better, we think this is nonsense too. But we're old farts, and numbers don't lie.
The Official Charts Company couldn't give a flying fig what you, or I, or everyone else here at Giz UK thinks of Ed Sheeran, and is using cold hard facts to crown Sheeran as the UK's artist of the decade. So suck it up. Such facts include 12 number one singles and albums between 2010 and 2019 which is more than anyone else in the charts, and 79 weeks at the top of both the albums and singles charts; again, more than any other artist.
"Thank you to everyone who’s supported me over the past 10 years, especially my amazing fans. Here’s to the next 10!" he posted the singer posted on Instagram. He also made a video saying the award was "completely mental," (again, we're with you on that one), before telling us he has deigns to stick around for another decade. So look forward to that.
"At the start of the decade, [Ed Sheeran] was a little known, albeit highly-rated, young 18-year-old lad from Suffolk - but his catalogue of achievements since then are genuinely remarkable. Today, he is firmly established among the highest level of global music superstars," said Martin Talbot, chief executive of the Official Charts Company. Being buddies with Jamie Foxx might have helped, but I'm not party to how the music industry works. I'm sure it was unrelated. [BBC News]
