Game of Thrones Takes Most-Torrented TV for 7th Year Running

By Holly Brockwell on at

Seven hells! Game of Thrones was once again the most-pirated title on TV in 2019, with millions of downloads a week and, impressively, causing an uptick in piracy in general.

BitTorrent data reported by TorrentFreak shows that we were all very keen to see how the epic eight-series adaptation of George R. R. Martin's giant books ended, although we all know how that turned out, and frankly we'd quite like to reclaim our time.

Now that Thrones has finished, there's a vacant slot at the top for this year's rankings. Second place went to Chernobyl, but of course that won't be back either (although to be honest, a second nuclear meltdown doesn't seem that unlikely with the way the world is going).

Third place went to The Mandalorian, which is exclusive to Disney+, no doubt increasing the number of people looking to get it less-than-legally – especially in places where the streaming service isn't available yet, like here.

Rounding out the top 10 were The Big Bang Theory (really, people?), Vikings, The Walking Dead (which dropped quite a few places this year), The Flash, Rick and Morty, Supergirl and Arrow. It's hardly surprising that nerdy shows are popular with pirates – you have to actually know how to torrent, and that's not something your Aunty Jill would understand when she wants to see Mrs. Brown's Boys.

Of course, insert the usual disclaimer about how BitTorrent data isn't everything and there's lots of piracy going on elsewhere. Whatever comes in first this year, we hope it's more worthy of your bandwidth than the godawful Thrones finale. Its Iron Throne has truly melted. [TorrentFreak]
