Northern Rail Nationalisation Could Happen This Week

By Gary Cutlack on at

Rumours from within government suggest that troubled rail franchise Northern may be ended this week, with a nationalisation set to end the Arriva-owned line's many troubles.

This would see the line handed to the Department for Transport's catchily-named Operator of Last Resort division, with the decision to nationalise expected to be announced by Transport secretary Grant Shapps within days.

Once he's signed that one off he'll open a new lever arch file containing details of the equally chaotic and financially troubled South Western franchise, a line also expected to be turned back to public ownership this year before it runs out of money and gives up all by itself. [Mirror]
