OnePlus' series 8 has had a couple of titbits leak indicating the company is forging ahead with 5G.
If the rumours are true, the OnePlus 8 will be the Chinese manufacturer's second foray into 5G following the OnePlus 7 Pro. After the 7 Pro's launch, CEO Pete Lau teased that another 5G ready handset would be on the way before 2019 was out, but it failed to materialise with the 7T series. At the time, Lau explained that the reason for this was the lack of 5G infrastructure but didn't write it off altogether. He did say we might see it return in 2020, and it looks like the OnePlus 8 is the smartphone to be doing that job.
The news comes from a source via Android Police, who cites OnePlus' plans to launch the handset on Verizon (a first for the company) along with a 5G version.
Another leak from late last week seemed to confirm the rumours of a 120Hz display. Well, I say 'leak'. The info comes via OnePlus invitations sent out to Chinese media for an event that took place today at its Shenzen HQ (via TechRadar). An event that confirmed the upcoming phone series would, in fact, include 120Hz displays with 2K resolution.
There are three models in the 8 series - One Plus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and OnePlus 8 Lite - and the jury is out on whether all three will sport the 120Hz display, or whether the 8 and Lite will be relegated to a 90Hz screen. Perhaps we'll see more leaks trickle out after today's event. [TechRadar]
