BBC Opens its Image Archives for Your Amazing Retro Webcam Background

A staggering collection of set images from the BBC's vast catalogue has been released by the broadcaster, for no purpose other than letting everyone set a glorious classic TV location as their live-stream background. If their webcam setup is new enough.

Obviously we went straight to the sci-fi section of the Empty Sets collection, and boy did it not disappoint. The top image there is from all-time great Blake's 7, letting you broadcast from the comfy seats while Avon infers Blake isn't up to the job in some new way. And Doctor Who is well represented too, with some old and new shots that let us examine the edges of the scenery in unprecedented detail...

Don't be too harsh, they didn't imagine someone would be zooming in on their rough edges 45 years later. There are also collections of images from sitcoms (Porridge, Good Life, Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones), children's TV and stacks of EastEnders going all the way back to 1986 and highlighting extremely lovely details like a lost socks board and fake washing powder brands in the laundrette. Well worth exploring even if you're not required to attend anything virtually in the near future. [BBC]
