Looks Like the iPhone 12 Comes Without a Charger or Earbuds

By Holly Brockwell on at

We're expecting to see the shiny new iPhone 12 range later this year (it's usually September, but coronavirus has put a spanner in everyone's works, so who knows), and a new packaging leak seems to confirm what an analyst recently claimed: that the new phone will come without a charger and earbuds.

Up to now, Apple has included a charger (5W or 18W depending on the phone) and a pair of wired earbuds, called EarPods, with every iPhone. However, a leaker on Twitter called Concepts iPhone is claiming they have the design for the inner portion of the iPhone 12 box, and there's no space for either:

A few things to note: this render has not come from Apple, and is presumably based on design specs someone got from somewhere. We have no information on who or where, so we have no clue how reliable it is.

Secondly, the material used in the render looks like plastic, which would be very un-Apple. We suspect that's a choice by whoever made the render, rather than something stipulated in the specs it's based on -- inserts are usually recycled paper.

Finally, while the insert only has two sections, we can't know for sure what's going to go in them. If the rumours are true, it'll just be a USB-C to Lightning cable in the round section and information booklets in the square bit.

If you somehow don't have a charger and something to listen to music with, Apple will be selling a 20W charger separately, probably for megabucks because Apple. You can also buy EarPods if you want to, though why anyone would when they're the cheapest, leakiest rubbish ever to exist is beyond me. Presumably Apple is hoping you'll stump up the extra and go for wireless AirPods instead.

One of the reasons for the change is rumoured to be the extra cost of putting 5G into the new line of phones, although we've also heard the iPhone 12 will be cheaper overall than the 11, starting at $649 (about £510) in the US. The iPhone box will apparently be thinner than usual, thanks to the missing items, and that'll save Apple some money on shipping costs too.

Other leaks have suggested the phone will come in four models, including a 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch Pro option with a 120Hz ProMotion display. The two smaller, cheaper models will apparently have 60Hz displays.

The 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max will allegedly have a 4400mAh battery, a smaller notch and wider-angle Face ID camera. It'll also apparently have slimmer bezels than its predecessor, and a quad-camera setup on the back with 3x optical zoom and -- interestingly -- a LiDAR scanner. The new range will of course have iOS 14, but you can try that out now if you can't wait. [T3]
